  • he used some interesting materials such as ink, acrylic paint, pencil, charcoal and wash
  • his pictures and drawings told stories
  • his work included lots of detail
  • he created alphabet letter that told a story
  • he drew famous people in random places
  • his art work was very neat and tidy
  • it was clever and funny
  • his sculptures were amazing
  • he includes hidden pictures
  • he was colour blind!

Probability games

In week three, room 6 made probability games. To do that we talked about what probability means. First we had to brainstorm ideas in our maths books, some people in pairs and some by themselves. We could use a dice or a coin. After Miss Bankers checked that our games worked and we were happy with them we could make our published games. Once they were published,we shared them with room 5. We had three rotations.

Some of the games were:

  • Mouse and cat
  • The twisted jungle of doom
  • Animal run
  • Cats and mouse
  • Rabbit and turtle
  • Heads, evens, tails and odds.

Tin can art

A few weeks ago our class made tin can art. This is how to make tin can art, you will need:
  • 1 tin can
  • orange acrylic paint
  • paint
  1. Draw a plan.
  2. Squash the can so one side is flat.
  3. Paint the can with acrylic paint.
  4. Make a second layer if you want to.
  5. LIGHTLY draw your plan onto the tin can.
  6. Paint your can piece by piece.
  7. Let it dry.
  8. Go around the drawing with black paint.
The hardest part for us was tracing around the picture in black.

The most fun thing was painting the tin can.

Pirate Lavender came to Charlotte's house

Pirate Lavender came to my house. In the morning she ate pancakes and sticky maple syrup for breakfast. Then she had a ride on my bunny Violot's back .  Brave Pirate Lavender swam with snakes and swung on the bar on my bed.  Then she had some quiet time to read Naomi the Netball Fairy by Daisy Meadows .

Life Education

For two weeks room 6 has been learning about the circulatory system with Victoria and Harold. We learnt about  the small intestine, kidney, heart, brain, muscle, lungs, arteries, veins, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, nutrients, waste, and analgesics/medicine. We learnt  these fact:
  • our heart beats 70 times a minutes
  • did you know that your kidney washes your blood every day?
  • there are one million filters in each kidney
  • did you know that you brain weighs the same as two butters (1.5 kg)?
  • you breathe 20,000 breaths a day.
  • did you know that your heart is a muscle pump?

Golfing Around

On Tuesday room 6 did some amazing golf with Chris. First we got in a line from tallest in the class to the shortest in the class. Next Chris told us to go to a cone and pick up a golf flag and swing it back and forth to practice our swinging. We learnt if you aim your tummy to where you want the ball to travel, it goes there. After that Chris put us into three groups. The groups were: 1, 2 and 3.Chris would call a group, that group would come up and Chris told us to pick up a ball and the golf club. We would put the ball on a cone and hit it off the cone straight away. Next we hit a tennis ball and then a golf ball. Finally it was time for morning tea so we said a big thanks to Chris.

Room 6's Amazing Calendar Art

In term 3 room 6 did calendar art, we chose to do silhouette art. Silhouette art is a black picture with colorful dye in the background!! The colours of the dye are red, purple, blue, green, yellow or orange.  We had to use a very dark black colour - it was a crayon.  These are some of our favorites:

  • Vikki -  a dolphin, cat and horse
  • Zeeta - a kiwi
  • Gabby - a tree
  • Maddie - a seahorse
  • Henry - a dinosour
  • William - a wolf
  • Murphy - Usain Bolt
  • Sam - famous buildings
If you want to buy a calender you must order it at the office.  You can get a diary, cards or a calendar.

Lavender's super weekend

Lavender had a great time at my house! The fun began on Friday I had my arm in a sling for a start (but by tea time it was off). We went on a protest march and Pirate Lavender was squeaking all the way! Then we went home for pizza! After a good sleep Pirate Lavender had pancakes for breakfast. Soon Lavender wanted  something to do so we decided to do Lavender's hair. The rest of the weekend Lavender was so  tired she slept until Monday by Lucy

Upcycling

Have you heard of the word UPCYCLING? It was one of our topics this term. It means "giving an old and unwanted item a new and useful purpose".  First we went and looked at some old and unwanted items in the Muritai Centre. There were things like scraps of fabric, plastic bottles, cardboard, bubble rap and aluminum. Then we each took a certain bit of something and filled in a little booklet. There were questions like: What properties does the material have? How could you join the material to something else? What does the material remind you of?

About two or three weeks later we were told that we were actually going to upcycle something! This was a shock to us and a few other people. Our first step was to (obviously) decide what to make. Then we had to sketch a plan of what we were doing and decide what we would use. After that we had to gather up the right materials, the hard part in that was that they had to be old or unwanted. Next step... taking action. Now we had to start making, no more thinking. Some people got out hot glue guns, others thread and needles. It took about four weeks for most people to finish.

I made a type of bag called a satchel (a rectangular bag with only one strap). I used an unwanted blanket, two boot buckles, an old sign and dad's old laptop bag strap. (Kate)

I made a rocket with my buddy Xavier. We used a plastic bottle, a tyre pump, a cork, a can and  some water. (Corbin)

Rock da House!

We had a lot of fun at Rock da House. There were  lots of people because they knew how awesome it was going to be. We wore white gloves and glasses that had special paint on them and when it was all dark the black light was switched and the gloves and glasses glowed. We did some awesome moves with the gloves like rolling and shaking! We sang a lot of songs. My favourite one was Kia Kaha Tuatara which was about how the tuatara was special and needed saving (Lucy). My favourite was Vida la Vida (Noah). There were also soloists and dancers. There were about 430 singers. Tahunanui took up a whole row because our school had the most people.

ReUse and Recycle Centre

On Thursday Room 6 went to the Recycle Centre. First we walked from our school to the Recycle Centre. There was a giant yellow robot completely made out of recyclables it is awesome! Then the man took us into the shop. We got to look at stuff that we might want to come back and buy. Bradey found a little toy there and Vikki found a piano.  Sadly when Bradey went back the toy was gone. Next we went to the Hub. The Hub is a big shed that is full with rubbish that goes on a conveyor belt and gets sorted into big cages. Then they get turned into groups of bundles. Finally the rubbish gets shipped off in containers to whoever has the most money.

Science In A Van

Today Science in a Van came to our school (well it wasn't really in a van. First of all Emily and Allan introduced themselves to us. Also Allan and Emily had a little chat to us about toys(Allan spends loads of money on science toys). Second of all Allan made a really loud banging sound with a whip by breaking the sound barrier. After lunch we had to line up for Science in a Van so we can see the world of bubbles! At the world of bubbles we made mixtures also Allan blew small bubbles, medium bubbles and big bubbles. When Allan was blowing medium bubbles with dry ice, it made the bubbles white and not see-through. Once Allan tested the bubbles out he got two people on stage (Mareva and Hennie). They had to cover their hands in bubble mixture then Allan blew the bubbles with the dry ice but only Mareva got a bubble because it did not work for Hennie. After that Mareva got some tips about how to pet her bubble but she had to pop it. Then Hennie and Mareva had to wash their hands. Finally Allan blew one small bubble, one medium bubble and one big bubble and then we said goodbye. By Marco and Macs

York Valley Landfill

On Thursday week 2, Room 6 went to the York Valley landfill. We saw lots of rubbish in a big hole 32 meters deep - it smelt like diarrhea!  There were 5 trucks. We stood on a high mountain covered with rocks. We saw some gas pipes and a compactor. There were some trucks dumping stuff in the huge hole. Max in room 5 found a McDonald's toy. I saw some stuff I would want.

Pirate Lavender at Isabel's house

On Friday night Pirate Lavender and I went to the Giants v Saints basket ball game.  It was very exciting because in the last minute the score was a tie, but then the Giants scored and the score was 88 to 89 to the Giants. Then we went home to bed.
The next day we went on the Spooners Tunnel walk.  It was really dark.  At the end we popped out into a clearing with trees around it. Then we had to walk back - it took ages but it was worth it!

Maths time in Room 6

In weeks 1 & 2, term 3 room 6 has been learning about volume for maths.
Volume is the space inside of something. Last week we were finding out the volume of containers with water. One day we did an estimate and an investigation to find out how many teaspoons fill a cup. We found it hard trying to find out how many teaspoons of water fill a cup.  We discovered that a teaspoon holds 5 ml, a cup is 250 ml and a 1 litre milk bottle is 1000 ml. The hardest question was how many milk bottles fill a bucket?

Tree Planting

On the 6th August, Tuesday we went to the beach to plant trees. We planted about 125! To plant a tree you need to:

  1. Dig a deep hole with a shovel.
  2. Check if the hole deep enough.
  3. Take the plant out of the pot. If this doesn't work bang it against your shovel.
  4. Tickle the roots (if needed)
  5. Place the plant into the hole.
  6. Fill the hole with dirt.
In the middle of tree planting it started raining! It was really funny because people started wearing carpet.

The Mid Winter Swim

On Thursday the 20th of June some of Tahunanui Schools crazy kids jumped into the freezing cold sea in the middle of winter.  We call it the mid winter swim, our school has been celebrating it for many years. Most people kept their heads out of the water.  The rest of them that did put their heads under probably lost their minds from the coldness. All we could hear was laughing and screaming, every one was jumping the waves prancing around like rabbits. After everyone was chattering with coldness, shivering with towels around them we got a nice hot shower and a warm milo was given out with chocolate fish, ha ha ha ha.

When we were all warmed up and dressed and about to walk back to school we had a big surprise their was a whale that came ashore. We got to go down to the dog beach and see it.  It was smaller than we imagined -  it was over the size of a dolphin but under the size of a big whale. It was sad to see a such a amazing animal stranded, it felt a little like rubber. It was probably a once in a life time sight, every one was glaring with amazement. The name of the whale was grays beak or scamper down.

Pirate Lavender's Boring Adventure

On Friday Pirate Lavender came to my place. The 1st thing we did was play play station 2 we played 5 games.  Pirate Lavender watched for the first 3 games. After that my bunny investigated  Pirate Lavender.
The next day we went to Kaiteriteri. When we got there I played on the playground by myself because Pirate Lavender wasn't allowed outside. Then we went to my mum's friends house - I played with their dogs, but Pirate Lavender had to stay in the car because the dogs would eat her.  Pirate Lavender was so greedy she snuck an ice-cream, chips and a burger!

On Sunday, we went to the super market and I was allowed to bring Pirate Lavender inside. Sadly my mum said Pirate Lavender was annoying and told her not to squeak.

The next day Pirate Lavender had to go back to school.

Our Brook Sanctuary visit

We had a trip to the Brook Sanctuary it was fun and interesting.

First tables 3,4 went on a long walk in the trees and did some stuff (e.g saw how some traps work) while tables 1,2 went with Jeff and did some other stuff inside. Rick told us about some of the plants as well  showing us some amazing tree weta we saw on the walk.

When we came back Jeff showed us four frozen pests:  ferrets, weasels, rats and stoats - freaky. After that he showed  us some geckos that the for the pests go for. Next we talked about other things like moreporks and how they would be beaten by a rat in a race to catch a gecko because the rat could smell it.  Even though a morepork has such good eye sight the gecko can camouflage so it can't see it but a rat can still smell it so that helps a lot.

We also talked about helping them to build a pest proof  fence by buying them a pole for $100.  On Friday we are having a mufti day to fund raise  for  money to buy a pole to put in the fence.

Then it was time to leave.  Everyone was sad, we all had a really good time.

Pirate Lavender at Hannah`s house.

Pirate Lavender had a ton of fun when she came to my house! First we made some cup cakes and Pirate Lavender was VERY greedy. When the cupcakes were baking I made her something to wear.e.g pirate hat and apron. After the cakes had finished cooking she obviously wanted to eat the lot. The next day we went to the Big adventure playground and played for a while.

Room 6's Tree Planting.

On Thursday the 6th of June room 6 did some tree planting for Arbor Day which means we planted a mandarin tree. Unfortunately we didn't get to eat the few mandarins that were on the tree because they got picked and the last one rotted , but it WAS fun planting them.
There were 5 steps to planting the tree:

  1. We chose which tree we were going to plant
  2. We dug a hole
  3. We put the plant in the hole
  4. We put soil down around the plant
  5. We patted the soil around the plant

CROSS COUNTRY

Last Friday the whole senior school went to Tahunanui Beach to do our cross country.  The 9, 10 and 11 year olds had to do 2 laps but the 8 year olds had to do 1 lap. Corbin came 11th and  Noah came 4th.  a The track was quite hard, especially along the beach because the sand was harder to get a grip.  Crossing the finishing great because its over and you feel proud of yourself.  It was awesome because everyone did their best - it was the best one yet!
